Build what matters.
Lead differently.

Rooted in relationship. Lessons from practice. Focused on impact.

Thoughtful conversations, practical strategies, and spaces for leaders ready to challenge the way things have always been done.

A different kind of leadership conversation

Big ideas. Real-world experience.

I'm Brianne Dornbush, a nonprofit founder, community ecosystem builder, and strategic advisor who believes meaningful change requires both bold thinking and a willingness to challenge the systems we've inherited.

For more than a decade, I founded, built, and led District Bridges, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit working at the intersection of community engagement, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization.

What began as a neighborhood initiative grew into a multi-million-dollar organization that pioneered innovative models to work across commercial corridors and communities, connect small businesses, residents, government agencies, and community partners to strengthen the places they share.

Community gathering

Over a decade, I developed the nation's first multi-Main Street model, a trust-based Community Navigation program, and an Ed-tech platform called Access Point - designed to create equitable access to technical assistance and support government compliance for small businesses. I built cross-sector partnerships, developed new approaches to small business support and community engagement, and navigated the complicated realities of organizational growth, public funding, and systems change.

I've experienced what it takes to build an organization from the ground up: developing the strategy, raising the money, hiring the team, creating the infrastructure, navigating political and institutional complexity, and making difficult decisions when circumstances change.

I've also learned that good intentions aren't enough. Sustainable impact requires thoughtful systems, honest conversations, strong relationships, and the ability to see beyond the immediate problem to understand the larger ecosystem.

Today, I bring those lessons to organizations, governments, and leaders working to solve complex challenges.

My work is grounded in practice, informed by experience, and focused on helping people build solutions that are both ambitious and achievable.

What I Believe

Relationships are infrastructure.

Lasting change depends on trust, collaboration, and the connections between people and institutions.

Systems shape outcomes.

When the same problems keep appearing, we need to examine the structures producing them rather than simply asking people to work harder.

Strategy has to survive reality.

The best plan isn't the most impressive document. It's the one that people can actually implement.

Leadership should be sustainable.

We cannot build healthy organizations and communities by continuously exhausting the people responsible for them.

Consulting & Strategic Advisory

Make the complex actionable.

Complex challenges rarely have simple solutions. Whether you're strengthening a local economy, navigating organizational change, or building a collaborative initiative, meaningful progress requires more than a good idea.

It requires understanding the ecosystem, aligning stakeholders, building the right infrastructure, and developing a strategy that can actually be implemented.

I work with mission-driven organizations, governments, and place-based partnerships to translate big challenges into thoughtful, executable strategies and real solutions.

My approach combines systems thinking with the practical perspective of someone who has spent more than a decade building, managing, and adapting programs and organizations in complex environments.

Speaking & Facilitation

Not another leadership keynote.

There is no shortage of conversations about leadership, collaboration, and creating change.

But too often, those conversations focus on what leaders should aspire to do without acknowledging the realities of actually doing the work.

I bring a practitioner's perspective to the stage, drawing on more than a decade of building organizations, navigating complex partnerships, developing community ecosystems, and confronting the challenges that come with trying to make meaningful change.

My talks are designed to challenge assumptions, spark honest conversations, and leave audiences with ideas they can put into practice.

Available for keynotes, conference sessions, fireside chats, panel discussions, executive retreats, and interactive workshops.

Signature Conversations

The Cost of Caring: Why Good Leaders Burn Out and How to Build Ecosystems That Don't

Burnout is often framed as an individual problem requiring better boundaries, more resilience, or improved self-care. But what if the problem isn't the leader? What if it's the systems we've built around them?

Drawing on firsthand experience building and leading a mission-driven organization, this talk explores how organizational structures, funding models, leadership expectations, and cultures of scarcity contribute to burnout.

It challenges audiences to move beyond individual coping strategies and consider what it would take to build organizations and ecosystems where both people and impact can thrive.

Place-Based Ecosystems and Collective Impact

Strong communities aren't built by individual organizations working in isolation. They're built through relationships, shared infrastructure, and coordinated action.

This conversation explores how to move beyond fragmented programs and organizational silos toward community ecosystems that connect people, businesses, institutions, and resources.

Drawing on lessons from neighborhood economic development and connective social services, it offers a practical framework for thinking about collaboration, shared responsibility, and place-based impact.

The Scarcity Trap

Scarcity shapes more than budgets. It shapes organizational behavior, leadership decisions, partnerships, and our willingness to imagine different possibilities.

When organizations compete for limited resources, protect their individual interests, and prioritize short-term survival, they can unintentionally reinforce the very systems they're trying to change.

This talk examines how scarcity thinking becomes embedded in mission-driven work and what it takes to create more collaborative, strategic, and sustainable approaches.

Building What You Can't Control

Some of the most important challenges we face require collaboration across organizations, sectors, governments, and systems that no single leader controls.

How do you create meaningful change when you can't direct the people, institutions, or resources necessary to make it happen?

This talk explores leadership through influence rather than authority, examining how relationships, trust, shared purpose, and strategic alignment make complex collective work possible.

Beyond the Keynote

I also facilitate workshops and strategic conversations designed to help teams move from ideas to action.

Topics can be customized to your audience, organization, or event.

The Braless Retreat

Take off the armor.

A space where women leaders don't have to hold it all together.

Leadership can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be exhausting, isolating, and full of expectations about who we're supposed to be.

We're expected to be confident, capable, composed, available, and have the answers.

The Braless Retreat is an invitation to put those expectations down.

Not just the professional ones, but the personal ones too.

It's a space for women executives, founders, and leaders to step away from their roles, connect with other women who understand the complexities of leadership, and have the kinds of conversations that don't always happen in boardrooms, conferences, or everyday life.
